This week I have been so joyful to be a mother. You don't always feel this way when your chasing babies, cleaning floors, and making endless snacks. But this week I was given joy an appreciation for my life with children, The Rev. and everything in between. It really is amazing to find life in the ordinary.

Jake and I had a lovely Thanksgiving. We hosted the homeless dinner at St. Georges, which is always such a great experience. I think Jake has that event memorized, it could not have run any smother.

The wonderful thing about Thanksgiving is we are reminded to be grateful for all the wonderful things we have been given in this life. I am grateful for our loving family and friends. I am especially grateful for my little ones and the Rev.

God is good!

Parish life coupled with motherhood can be so busy. It did not seem so busy when Henry couldn't walk yet and Sophia was in school, but now that Henry can run and jump off the dinning room table, life feels a little overwhelming. Not to mention our ever busy fall schedules, I am actually looking forward to the winter because life actually becomes simpler and less busy.

Such a sweet smile for a boy who NEVER stops.

Dia De Los Muertos

Today is Dia De Los Muertos. If your not familiar with this Mexican tradition it can seem really strange. I like to think of it as Mexico's version of All Saints Day. A holiday dedicated to remembering family and friends who have died. This tradition is all about the artisanship of sugar skulls, yes I know it sounds creepy, but I think it is inspiring and beautiful too.

Marigolds are the traditional flowers used for this festivity. Traditionally one would create a center piece of photos, favorite indulgences, flowers, and sugar skulls to a family member who has passed. It is a beautiful remembrance. It may seem strange if your not accustomed to the tradition, but with a little curiosity you will see there is much beauty and artisanship behind this festive tradition.

Apple Picking....

Our Fall has been full. Jake has had weddings every weekend from September to October 7th, so when he suggested we get away for a day I said YES!!!!! We had a fantastic time, the Fall is so special. I will say Miss. S did not enjoy how "dirty" the farm was where we picked our apples. I think Jake carried her most of the way through.

Small and very thoughtful details really do pull an event together. For Sophia's tea party we gathered all the tea cups in the house and borrowed this beautiful elephant tea pot from a friend. Every detail counts.

Sophia is obsessed with gum balls. Did you know Party City sells them in EVERY color you could want??

Sophia loves sparkle, so instead of just four burning candles we threw in a few extra for a burst of light, she loved this!!

Every year I make crowns for the party, this year I was a little worried it was not going to come together because I could not find the time having had the flu at the beginning of the week. Lucky for me and Sophia I had some midnight elves come and help me finish this favorite detail.

Remember the Fish's Eddy's straws??? They were everywhere and the girls LOVED them. They tried using them in their tea cups.

What better choice in flowers then the Sweet Heart Rose. They are small, come in a variety of pinks and oranges. They were the perfect flower for this event.

I also suggest using real china when it comes to a party, it makes the event feel all that more special.

First off, today is Miss. Sophia's birthday. We love this girl so much. We are so appreciative of her contribution and life in our family. She is full of love and joy. WE LOVE YOU and Happy Birthday.

I love to host and plan a party. I say keep it simple where it counts. When your planning any party you need a vision for the event. A few months ago I was dreaming up Sophia's All Girl Tea Party. I was inspired by the decor in the Plaza Hotel. They have a great little tea room with so many detailed items. You definitely spring from inspiration into your event. I say go big in the right ways.

For Sophia's party I knew that pink would be our principle color. I like a bit of pink, but know it can be a little much so, I thought tiffany blue would offset the extreme pink. So, once I picked our inspiration, theme, and color I ran with party from there

To keep yourself from feeling overwhelmed I buy along the way. When I was in AZ in September, I picked up so many great items at such great pricing. It was fantastic. All of these details pull your event together.

Stealing a Moment

Every Tuesday is designated as my Home To Do List day. My day often starts at 6:00 with Henry, our homemade alarm clock. I feed him, wake Miss. S who would love to sleep in, then get everyone dressed. More often then not we have drop off, grocery shopping, and then the deep clean begins. Last week H put an end to this very busy schedule. We stole a couple hours away painting together. It was totally worth throwing off our every busy Tuesday.

Have you found yourself so busy you don't enjoy what you have in front of you? I am often reminded of what busyness does as the little ones grow and I find myself in a constant state of motion with never ending lists of things to do.

I LOVE these beautiful scarves. I was recently having dinner with friends on the Upper Westside. She has a beautiful collection of these special scarves &decided to frame a couple in her living room. I will say they are show stoppers. One day if I am so lucky to have one of these scarves, I will do the same.

Photo Shoot

Each fall Jake & I organize ourselves for a family photo. The entire project is fun for me, because I start to pretend I am stylist & have a little to much fun with wardrobe. The actually day of the shoot is usually a comedy of errors.

Here is how is goes, EVERYTIME, me I shower before anyone is awake. Then I going into hair & makeup, aka.... ME. Then I wake Jake up and he showers while I prep Miss. S because she is no where near as messy as H. Once she is ready I dress Henry, he is adorable & all boy so, timing is everything.

Once we are all dressed this process is from 7-9, which BTW, the kids can't eat anything messy which causes a bit of ruckus. When 9:00 arrives so does Jeremy, our fantastic photographer friend, who by the way has allowed us to pay him in food.

We are dressed & ready. Now if you know my husband you know he does not like to take pictures & family pics are particularly stressful. My job keep it cool & blissful, Jeremy helps too. I say when your taking family photos do what you can & hope for a captured moment that reveals the "real" you or Smiths in our case.

I picked a few spots then let the kids run around spontaneously while Jeremy shot away. All in all we had a great time, I am sure Jeremy captured something fantastic. We were lucky enough to take him along with us apple picking, which by the way we used a bribe with the kids all morning. I am sure he captured some fun shots of the kids.

A few weeks ago I had a couple of sewing lessons and in an instant, or three hours, I had five new pillows. I know I would have saved cash if I would have purchased new pillows, but the plus is that I did not waste old pillows, I just recovered them, and I completed a project I felt really good about.

I was so excited about the pillows I decided to attempt the recovery of two old chairs with dingy old fabric. It was a bit of a chore, but totally worth it in the end. I saved two chairs and gave our home a fresh new look.

Just to mention, I know I have a million times, but Dahlias are everywhere. They are such a happy fall flower. They make everything feel more homey and fall, what more could you want in October.

The Mantle

There are so many special reminders on our mantle, photos of when we first arrived, our wedding photo, and the original brick of our wonderfully old building.

On the wall there is a painting of Sophia's when she was two, two kitch silhouettes of the kids from the Disneyland, a drawing from an artist friend, a famous photograph we won at an auction, and two framed prints that remind me of Jake. The blue one on the bottom left corner is a drawing of a New York couple around Gramercy Park, and the one on the upper left corner is a print of a french couple in the 1800s, it is regal with a feeling of romance.

All that being said every detail is part of our story & I love each little detail. Can you find Jake's antique prayer books?

Last weekend Jake and I celebrated the Mustard Seed's work and fundraiser. In case you don't know who they are, here is the gist, they are an amazing organization taking care of those most vulnerable and in need. They educate, love, and protect the physically and mentally handicapped orphans of Jamaica, AMAZING. We were thrilled to be part of the event and have the opportunity to arrange flowers for the VIP tables.

When preparing several arrangements for a space I like for the arrangements to complement each other while maintaining some form of individuality. This is the large arrangement.

You know I have been thinking of floral prints these days, especially with Fashion week just whizzing by. I stumbled upon these Valentino dresses and thought to myself in addition to the Oscar De La Renta floral print, this I could wear.

I went to the flower market on Labor Day and found most of the shops to be closed. I had to think quick because I was arranging for a regular client and with no flowers in our market, I was in a tough spot. I wondered into the tropical plant shop hoping for some new inspiration. Of course there were many colorful flowers to be found, but found myself strongly attracted to the ever clean and sophisticated white orchid. My client has some modern shaped vases and thought this will be easy as one, two, three!!!

I love how much care is given to these delicate flowers. The gentleman tissue wrapped each one and placed them in a brown bag and placed tissue in the bag, what a deal for just 25 dollars each.

Just squeeze the bottom of the pot and gently remove.

Then gently place the orchids in your pot and mold the flower into place.

Aren't they good looking and to think these arrangement cost less than 60.00 dollars.

Clean, white, and modern, what more could be desired in a home.

Mustard Seed

This month I have arranging for a fantastic Jamaican group raising money for the Mustard Seed Foundation. mustardseed.com They are an amazing community caring for the handicapped and orphaned of Jamaica. Jake and I are always happy to participate in anyway we can. This year their floral budget is 3.00 per table(yikes). I will be helping the group set the tables and beautify the VIP room. This is what I found on my 3.00 budget search in terms of plants. All of these plants are just three dollars each, you can't beat that.

I am playing with ideas in my head and am not yet defeated by the budget. Stay tuned to see what I come up with. In the meantime I am thinking up some fun flower ideas for the VIP room. Jake and I are going to be donating those arrangements so, there is a bit of freedom from the 3.00 budget.

Widow's Mite is located in Murray Mount, St. Ann and is the first residential home for abandoned children with disabilities that Mustard Seed Communities developed outside of Kingston. Widow’s Mite cares for twenty children.

Mary's Child

Mary’s Child is a home for pregnant teens and their babies and is one of the only residential facilities of this kind in Jamaica. Mary’s Child accommodates twelve mothers and their babies for periods of up to a year. The home provides academic instructions, counseling and skills training to residents with the goal of providing the residents with the skills they need to be successful in their lives when they leave Mary’s Child.

Sophie's Place

Sophie’s Place, located in Gordon Town, St. Andrew, is home to over twenty children with profound disabilities. The residents participate in a collaborative project with the University of Technology in which they attend daily sessions with occupational therapists on the University campus.

Sophie’s Place provides accommodations for volunteers, a chapel, and Little Angels basic school which serves some residents of Sophie's Place and children from the surrounding communities.

It was a picnic of sorts. S has been obsessed with teacups and picnics, all in the days work of a 3year old. Sunday we had a picnic while H took a long nap.

Cactus Flower

I know this photo is about five years old(Kate Spade), but I think of it often because it reminds me of Bisbee and our family trips to Douglas, AZ. There is a hidden beauty to the barren desert. I am a girl who was surrounded by cactus most of my upbringing, so when thinking of flowers in my youth the saguaro or barrel cactus is what comes to mind.

Having a 18 month isn't always easy in a city where our streets and sidewalks are ALWAYS busy. Jake and I always joke we are on "henry" watch, because he constantly runs towards danger. Lucky for us we do have great parks and zoos to run wild in.

it is no secret S loves "salchichas" hotdogs. so, when we head to the zoo having a hotdog is on top of the list. today we brought our own lunch, but could not resist a special treat from the new cart in the park. isn't it good looking, it is the only one of its kind that i have seen. check them out next time your there!

POST HURRICANE

It was a high anxiety weekend, but we made the most of it with friends, and a slumber party put on by Sophia. On Sophia's post hurricane menu and the only food left in the house; Tate's chocolate chip cookies (amazing), popcorn (in honor of miss. francis), and sweet potato chips. Jake and I added pink mimosas, while S stuck with chocolate milk.

PTL we all survived and in the city, the hurricane was uneventful in our hood.

ONE:I am not a big fan of Sunflowers, one they are soooo big, two they attract bugs, and three it feels like they are staring at you. Anyhoo, not a big fan, but when I walked by this stand I couldn't help but tip my hat off to the Sunflower. Admittedly in this setting they are good looking and I was tempted to make a purchase.

Whats the consensus? LOVE it?

TWO: I did not make a flower purchase this day and all the arrangements in my home were muerto. I say when your out of flowers make do with what you have in your home. Fruits and veggies can really be good looking and offer a fresh/clean look to a home. I threw two different types of oranges together in a clear bowl and in a flash my table was set.

Hurricane Ready W Style

So, all last week Jake told me about the upcoming hurricane. Of course I didn't take him seriously until Friday, two days before it was to hit. I fled to the stores like EVERYONE else in NYC, bought over priced flash lights, lots of pretty candles(i mean we definitely needed them), and beautiful ingredients from Whole Foods. While in the midst of the frenzy my anxiety began to rise and I felt a bit freaked out.

SOLUTION: BUY FLOWERS

When I returned home with all our beautiful food and flowers I began to arrange. I only spent 16.oo dollars and ended up with 7 mini arrangements, which lasted through the storm. They kept us cheery and everything seemed alright.

While in AZ this summer I took advantage of some quant antique stores. J had to hold me back from buying too many tables cloths. There were to many to choose from and so good looking. I organized my purchases by aesthetics. I gravitate naturally toward blues, greens, and soft yellows. I love a clean yet floral look. What do you think? Are table cloths a thing of the past?

Reinventing Space

Part of raising children in NYC is being able to tackle space issues. If a space is messy and cluttered why bother with flowers. You need a space to be organized and semi-clean feeling to add flowers to a space. I love all the great bright colored boxes and canvas containers IKEA carries, they are inexpensive and good looking.

Don't forget to add signature to your space when it comes to your kids, a child's space can so easily become what you want and not appeal to who they are. I often say we get mixed up when it comes to children, we often just view them as extensions of ourselves rather than seeing them as their own individual people.

Check out Sophia's church outfit Sunday, it is to die for. Do you spy last seasons boots? BTW sometimes I let S decorate the space herself, she proudly has art taped up on her walls.

City Flowers

Living in NYC you don't usually see flowers growing freely like in most places. You are often inspired by floral design and color via store fronts. Like I always say good floral design makes each day a little better.

Last week I was in the flower market and ran across a homeless man's little shack. Now his abode has been on 28th and 6th which seems to be without disturbance for several months. I love what he has done with his space. He has nothing, but has something from the flower community. Each time I pass by he has ranging varieties of flowers and plants surrounding his place. I know it seems weird, but it always makes me happy to see. BTW the man is lovely and completely engrossed in his "garden".

So, my husband finds it hilarious how far new yorkers go for the farm to table life style. Me, I am all in, no shame here I love it and often roll my eyes when the rev. makes is clever little comments, btw, he adores eating in this fashion. Today I was going through the farmers market and Whole Foods, which I adore. Now, like I said I love farm to table living, but today I had to give a shout out to Jake.

In Whole Foods they now have a canning system. You can go in buy all the essentials for canning and do it yourself. They also how have grains in large tubes that you can jar yourself. Now, in the world of Manhatten where you have zero space, I thought to myself, now this is hilarious. We live in one of the most modern, sophisticated cities, and here we are canning our own food.

I love you NYC so, I will leave the canning to those who can!!!

The Exchange

Last week, I arranged some country inspired arrangements including freesia, ferns, and white roses. As the week came to its natural conclusion I was struck by how well they lived throughout the week, not all of the arrangements survived but there were enough to gather the living and make one last arrangement.

Now that I was left with empty vases the natural solution is to buy more flowers! I know most people think it is crazy to buy flowers weekly because of all the other many costs life brings. Although my life moto is to live a little each day, that is why I find flowers and well made cappuccinos to be irresistible. What is more pleasure then a clean house with flowers and a espresso each day?

Sophia, Henry, and I wondered through the farmers markets and we were delighted to see all the wonderful zinnias, dahlias, varieties of sunflowers, and scabiosas everywhere. Now, I am thinking on a budget and what will last throughout the week. My goal was to buy some essentials and flowers with the 25 dollars in my pocket. Lucky for me the scabiosas were just 8 dollars a bunch. They appear to be scrawny, but with the proper vases they can go a long way. I was able to make five arrangements out of this beautiful bunch.

What a pleasure to have such a rare, beautiful, and vibrant flower throughout the home.

Frida Friday

Some of you may know I love Frida, she is a mix of beauty, life, and the bizarre. Whats not to love. This summer we spent a couple of weeks in AZ, making a stop in Tucson, which I would say is the best city in Arizona. This city is colorful, vibrant, the food is excellent, and the people are kind. The kids and I bought lots of Tucson kitch, including little Frida decor for the home. Can you find it among the Scabiosas???? I also found the scabiosa to be the most appropriate flower to accompany our little ode to Frida, they are delicate, feminine, all while being slightly strange.

Just the addition of flowers to any room can bring beauty and calm. What I love about flowers on a bedside table is that you have the impression your in a luxury hotel or hosted with love and style. Last week we stayed in upstate NYC the home was lovely and a bit rustic. We invited many friends and added flowers throughout the home environment. For our gentlemen visitors I arranged ferns and for our sweet couples colorful arrangements were found on their bedside tables. Simple touches make all the difference.

I have said it before the container can make all the difference when you are making an arrangement. Last night friends had us over for a welcome home dinner. Sophia and I decided to make them a country living inspired arrangement. When we were done we had a few flowers left over. i just recently purchased these vintage medicine bottles and thought what a perfect place for whispy left over flowers. What is your inspiration? I have been struck by the beauty of sweet vintage home decor. These jars are very special and the blue in the glass is perfect.

The fam and i have been in Twilight Park this past week. Our home is full of inspiration for home living. i have loved every detail of the home we are staying in and all the beautiful wild flowers surrounding us. i don't think jake and i will ever do a camping trip after experiencing this home and the splendor of the Hudson River Valley. If you can get out to Hunter Mt. i could not recommend this area more highly.

Jake, the kids, and I have been away in Twilight Park. This time together has given us the opportunity to reflect on our last ten years together as married people. It has been extrodinary and we have experianced life in away I could not have imagined for myself. When Jake and I were first married we spent two years in Yuma AZ doing youth ministry while I finished graduate school. Yuma is a small hot town in AZ with not much to do, but I remember our time there being rich with friends and always fun. We then went off to seminary where we have meet our very best friends. It was such a funny little town in Pittsburgh, I would not say we were moving up in life from Yuma, but had the most rich and happy time there. The last five years have been spent in NYC at Calvary St. Georges. Church life has been extrodinary, exciting, and all at the sametime challanging in everyway. NYC is the place our children were born and we feel the most at home. Where will the next ten years take us??? I have no idea, what I do know is as along as Jake is by my side it will be full of laughs, random information, and full of life.

i am obsessed with mixing the old with the new. five years ago my best friend gifted me a set of silver for a thrift shop, which cost her 25 dollars. What a steal, it is one of my all time favorite gifts. For a year I never used the silver, jake said to save it for a special occasion. I figured that each meal we have together is pretty special and I am all for a little glam eachday. I decided we are going to use the silver. I have been picking up pieces ever since and mixing away. Fish Eddy's is a great place to start a collection at a very reasonable price. I saw go all out a little eachday!

Dress it up!

So often we are lazy when it comes to dinner time. We barely have the energy or time to put a fabulous meal together let alone dress it up. I am here to say that a table cloth goes a long way. It can make any meal or meaningful and it takes two seconds. This last week Jake and I were in Az and I found some fantastic vintage tablecloths for 8 to 20 bucks each. They were great finds. I am washing them at the moment, they reak of moth balls. I am telling you a table cloth guarentees better dinner conversation and time with any dinner guest.

Ten Years

Today is my anniversary of ten years. I am in a bit of shock that time has flown by so quickly. Jake and I met in college when i was 18 years old and I knew when I meet him I would know him forever. It truely was one of those moments when you just know and are so sure of something. We have been together ever since. He has loved me, encouraged me, and entertained me all this time.

We spent our day celebrating at the Setai Spa here in NYC, thanks to some very generous friends. I do have to say it was a pretty amazing experiance and hope heaven has a Setai Spa. What more could you want champagne and a massage.

Fall Weddings

This summer has been quiet on the flower front because we have been away and are just very busy with church life. It is a unique balance our family shares. This fall I am focusing on taking one flower class and working on getting S into a proper school for 2012. Lots to do and think about, but I must stay focused and keep on with my creative side.

Many of you say, yes flowers are great in NYC but I live in a place where flowers are too expensive or hard to find. Do not fear and please do not turn to fake flowers. There is a wonderful alternative, when it comes to flowers on a budget. Paper flowers are so easy to create. They are an amazing addition to any party you maybe celebrating. Plus if you do them on your own you can select the exact colors to fit your event.

We are having a small birthday party for my father. No reason not to glam the event up a bit. First I chose to go with a popping blue color along with some fun accents. There is nothing like color even for a simple pizza party for four. I also just added some fun extras, to give it a sense of occasion.

Martha's Vineyard

We had the most wonderful family vaca for the fourth of July in Martha's Vineyard. What a wonderful and special place. I hope we can return every summer.

While I was there I had my eye out for the flower scene. What I ran across the most were hydrangeas and beautiful wild flowers. Aren't these sweet flowers lovely. They recall all the wonderful summer memories children have, playing freely in fields and picking flowers for mother.
